Epinephrine Autoinjector Administration - Online Inservice

Epinephrine is a fast-acting medication, used in emergency situations, to improve breathing, stimulate the heart, raise blood pressure, combat hives, and reduce swelling of the face, lips, and throat signs generally associated with having a severe allergic reaction or anaphylactic shock. Also known as adrenaline, Epinephrine is a simulation of the hormone responsible for the “Fight or Flight” syndrome which is produced naturally in the human body. We will briefly cover the science behind Epinephrine’s exact effect on anaphylaxis in this course. 

Epinephrine is stored as an autoinjector pen and is available by prescription for those with severe allergies triggered by things such as certain insects, animals, foods, drugs, or even latex. In many of our adult care homes, assisted living facilities, schools, and summer camps across the country, caregivers are responsible for recognizing anaphylactic emergencies and providing appropriate care until emergency services arrive. Identifying the symptoms of anaphylaxis and responding appropriately to the situation could mean life or death. This course will review for caregivers, educators, teachers, school nurses, and any layperson interested in knowing how to administer this life-saving medication via the autoinjector or Epipen®.
